Biography

Zabeen Kaizar Mahuwala, MD, is a neurologist certified in neurology and epilepsy by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She completed her fellowship training at the University of Texas at Dallas in clinical neurophysiology before joining the University of Kentucky in October 2016 as an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology. Mahuwala specializes in caring for adults with epilepsy and neuromuscular disorders, and she has special interests in immune-mediated neuromuscular disorders, such as myasthenia gravis, neuropathies and myositis. She also manages the ALS Multidisciplinary Clinic. Her epilepsy practice focuses on patients with generalized and focal epilepsy with a special emphasis on treating drug-resistant epilepsy and women and older adults with epilepsy. She performs electroencephalography in the outpatient setting and extended monitoring in the inpatient setting for diagnostic and management purposes. She also performs electromyography (EMG). Mahuwala is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, American Epilepsy Society, American Clinical Neurophysiology Society, and American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine. She is also a member of the Wellness in Training Committee at the UK College of Medicine and chairs her department’s Wellness Committee. She is deeply interested in wellness and reducing physician burnout. Mahuwala has received several awards for her hard work, including the 2019 Abraham Flexner Medical Education Excellence Award and the 2015 Kiffin Penry Award for Fellowship in Epilepsy. She is also a reviewer for the Institutional Review Board at UK. Feeling deep compassion for her patients and their families, Mahuwala diligently works to provide them with the highest level of care.
