The Headache & Pain Fellowship is an one-year fellowship accredited by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS). It provides an opportunity for eligible physicians who wish to gain advanced training in the specialty of headache medicine. Upon successful completion of the program, fellow should be eligible for certification in Headache Medicine by the UCNS.
Under the direction of Siddharth Kapoor, MD, FAHS, who is a Diplomat of the ABPN (Neurology) and UCNS (Headache Medicine), UK College of Medicine has a comprehensive clinical headache program strongly integrating treatment of both adult and pediatric patients. The one-year Fellowship focuses on clinical care, including evaluation and treatment of outpatients in the integrated Neurology/Neurosurgery Kentucky Neuroscience Institute and inpatients in the newly opened state-of-the-art University Hospital. Extensive experience is provided in the use of Botulinum toxin, trigger point injections and infusions. Multidisciplinary experience is gained through collaboration with and direct exposure by participation in Orofacial Pain, Interventional Pain and Neuro-Ophthalmology clinics. The fellow is also expected to participate in regularly scheduled meetings, including teleconferences, that are organized by the American Headache Society and have participants from most of the accredited programs in the country.
Fellows are encouraged to take part in research or basic research and protected time is afforded. Under the leadership of the director and other faculty, the fellow will manage patients in the headache clinic. Fellow will also be involved in the training of residents and medical students as well as provide consultations on the in-patient service.
Applicants for the fellowship must be Board-eligible/certified by the ABMS and be graduates of a residency program accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). They should have a current valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the US and/or be eligible for a license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
